Harley X90 / No spark

#1
I Need some help. I am an experienced motorcycle guy but could use some advice. I am currently working on 2 Harley light weights. I have a 73 TX125 and a X90. My question is(X90); After many days of testing, I have juice to the plug wire that will light a test light when kicked over but I get No spark from a plug. So power to the end of the plug wire but no spark and it is a good plug. Any ideas?

might not be enough power, I would look at the points, Make sure they are adjusted correctly and are in good working order. and are you sure its good plug, have you tried another plug or used that plug in another known firing system?

Sometimes the mags fail as well, I have had some bikes do that in the past, they don't produce enough juice to make it fire, swap mags out and off and running. Have you had the flywheel off?

I have tried 2 different new spark plugs with the same outcome. So if the points are not adjusted good it will light a test light but not a spark plug? I have the side cover off but not the mag. Do you guys think I should try new points and condensor then?

If you have enough power to fire a test light but not a spark plug, I would check the coil and the condenser. How much voltage does the plug wire put out? Can you hold the end of the plug wire in your hand while kicking the motor over?

If you are going to remove the rotor, make sure that you use the correct puller or you risk ruining the end of the crankshaft.

A weak spark is a common problem. You can clean up the points without removing the rotor and retest for spark at the plug.

The side cover was off when I bought the bike. I checked the points and they were not opening. I adjusted them and tried it again. Still No spark with a plug, but it lights a test light. I haven't put a multi meter on it yet. Also, when I was kicking it over with the plug out, a small amount of an oil like substance came out the plug hole. Another problem? This mini may be beyond me to restore. To bad too because X90 riders restorations realy got me excited about it.

Slick the points with a file or some emery paper then kick it over again.
Don't worry about the oil coming out of the plug hole. The oil pump works when you turn the engine over.

What type of test light are you using, a continuity test light or a voltage test light?

Im using a continuity test "light". I do have a multi meter though. Should I use the multi meter to test at the end of the plug wire, or maybe the coil? Thanks for telling me not to worry about the oil. I was ready to sell it.

x-90s advice is sound, Clean the points with emery, then contact cleaner, then ohm meter across the points open and closed, closed should be 0.00 ohms. if not clean again.

Use the contiuity tester and check the taillight bulb. Replace if necessary. The bulb is the fuse for your ignition.
