In need of some advice

Hey guys, I've ran into something a little odd and I'm not quite sure how to handle it.

A few weeks back, I picked up a 1970 Rupp Roadster. It's complete. As hard as it to find any Rupp bikes around here, I was over the moon. I've already started pulling it apart piece by piece and polishing it up.

Since I have an ad on Craigslist, I used the photo of this bike in my ad. I figured it would be good to change it out from time to time. Tonight, I got a text from a guy. He said that he had a Rupp Roadster when he was a kid. Now, they're not real common around here. Then he mentioned his had a kickstarter. In my picture, you can't see the kickstarter. He also described the stickers on the back side of the tank. Sure enough, they're there, but not in the photo on my ad. This bike was never listed on CL, so I figure he's being honest. Then he says that he is certain that this bike was the one he had when he was a kid and says he wants to come look at it and will "bring cash".

I told him it wasn't for sale and offered to help him find another Roadster, or Rupp Mini Cycle instead. He seemed really bummed out. He wanted to relive this bike with his son and refinish it. He started talking about how his biological dad and he didn't get along. He left for Iraq on a tour of duty, and when he got home, his dad had died and the bike was no longer there. He mentioned that he's a 100% disabled war-veteran. I'm not really a fan of sob-stories, and I'm not even sure I believe it.

Here's the dilemma: I don't want to sell the bike. It would be impossible for me to find another Rupp around here -- much less a complete 1970 Raodster. I also don't want to deprive this guy of reliving his childhood memories. It's complete, but not really in the best condition. The chrome is really bad in a few spots and the paint is in bad shape... BUT without knowing I can find another... You get the idea...

Do I

A) Offer to sell him the bike at what I have in it, which isn't much and be happy with helping someone out

B) Offer him the bike, and make enough that I can buy another one and have it shipped to me

C) Tell him it's not for sale and keep it

I know it's my right do what I want, but I like helping people. At the same time, I don't want to screw myself out of a bike knowing I'll never find another.

I am the kind of person that would sell it to make enough to get another, if that is what you really want.

But I also know what is is like to ride a Scat Bat and Bonanza as a kid and know I will probably never get another like them.

I guess it depends on how big your heart is.

BTW, there are a lot of Rupps out there...

Sell him the bike. There are LOTS of Rupps out there. I happen to know a guy....

He still has the bike but I'm not sure if he still wants to sell it. I'll talk to him this weekend and let you know.

If I could find the Lil Indian that's in my avatar pic I would trade just about anything for it, or pay an absurd amount for it. By the way, it was sold in Clarence NY, a Buffalo suburb back in the 80's:scooter:

Interesting problem. I have basically given people bikes because they had to have them because it was what they had as a kid. Only to watch them sell it for market value and make some dough not long after they got them from me or trade it off. But I still fall for the sentimental aspect.....and every time it happens. The key question I always forget to ask..and find out later is...."why did they get rid of it in the first place?". I am not saying this is the case with your issue...but something to think about. And there is always the other option..."You are gonna keep it for now...and if you ever sell it..he will get first dibs". And original bikes are not so simple to come across....

i'm a bit suspicious about this story.

the guy is probably casing you out, he has been
on or near your property and saw the bike.

there are lots of nutjobs on CL. the last sob
story we heard here turned out to be a scam
that affected quite a few members.

You all are great people, and I thank you for all the prayers and donations from the bottom of my hart.
May the lord smile upon you all.

i would bring the bike to him to check him out, and then sell it at enough profit to get another... and probably keep the kick start.

it does sound like he knows the bike since he listed details about it that were not in pics. id make sure he wasnt going to resell.. maybe get him to sign something that says if he sells it, it has to be back to you! not that you can really enforce it, but if someone is willing to sign something they are usually willing to stick to it if they arent a complete POS

After reading some replies last night I sent the guy a text and told him I would sell it. He is supposedly coming by later today to look at it. He sent me this reply

"Yes sir you've made my day praying Jesus blesses you"

That sounds awfully close to the one Markus posted.

I doubt the guy has been near my house or has seen the bike. My house is very secluded. I will keep you guys posted. As of yet, he hasn't called to let me know he is coming, and I intentionally didn't give him my address yet

If you do decide to let him come to your house and look at it. Watch his body language. Look for sparkleness in his eyes. And giddyness in his movements as his scopes it, followed crackyness in his voice. These thing things cant be easley faked. Look at it kinda like you just found his lost dog and he is comming to picked it up. Also watch how he interacts with his son over the bike. ( The boy should be with him ) This will tell if he is legit. PS keep the kick starter..

im a firm believer in Karma but theres too many variables here...
if its his old bike im sure he has a pic of it.
this Really sounds more like he found out about the bike from the guy You got it from...?

i sell a lot off CL and have met some Funky individuals that i wouldnt have normally.

two thoughts..
take your camera, take pics of this Guy and his Vehicle too/tags
if he asks why, because you wanted pics of the joyful reunion blah blah blah.

and, dont meet him at your place.
esp a secluded house where he can come back and yeah.

How about a pic of this mystery bike ?
I put a new seat cover on it. The kickstarter was removed and sold already. I was planning on restoring it and the kickstart wasn't original. Since these pictures were taken, I've removed all the chrome and polished it up. With exception to a a few dents in the front fender and the front wheel, it polished up nicely. I've already gotten some quotes to have it powdercoated, and was planning on sending it off in the next few weeks.
