Employee reports seeing cougar on Microsoft campus

A Microsoft employee reported seeing a cougar this morning on the company's Redmond campus near Building 35.

Redmond Police spokesman Jim Bove said his department got a report from Microsoft security at 10:15 this morning, saying an employee had reported a cougar.

Microsoft security called Redmond police again at 1:38 p.m. saying one of Microsoft's security officers saw a coyote by Building 30. That's a coyote, not a cougar.

"My guess is it was the same" animal, Bove said.

Lou Gellos, Microsoft spokesman, said by e-mail that "proper authorities are investigating," although he did not specify which agencies were involved.

Earlier this month, Seattle shut down Discovery Park after a cougar was spotted in or near the park.

Update 5:07 p.m.: Capt. Bill Hebner at the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife said his department had received the report of the cougar but is not actively searching for the cougar.

“We get three to four reliable cougar sightings a day from people,” he said. “Unless they are aggressive or pose a human safety risk, it doesn’t necessarily initiate a capture response from our agency.”

The department is asking anyone who sees a cougar to call the department at 425-775-1311.
