The MTD probable came with a Fairbanks Morse brand unit.
The other name could be Comet.
Here is a video I found showing a Comet driven. The Fairbanks Morse is similar.
The operation is the same though.

That looks better. Just make sure you wind the pulley clockwise so it has some tension before you bolt it on tight.
