OK...this is not about racing or max power, but more about rideability, carb "flexibility" or ability to change engine speeds..and messing about with mechanical stuff...

What sort (if any) of (hopefully lobuck) carb options exist for adaptation to a 3 hp Briggs...or 5 hp Tecumseh, 'er whatever?

The briggs 5hp fun kart carb will help the flow of your stock 3hp briggs. It pretty much works the same way with any small engine. If there is a larger model, you can normally fab up the larger carb onto the smaller motor.

OK, dunno why I didn't say this, but part of my criteria was also that the carb not have an attached gas tank...thinking of a tiny Amal here or something...

Just about anything other than stock or one from a larger model will require you to remove the governor. I like the Tecumseh carbs better than the Pulsajets mounted on the tanks on Briggs&Strattons. Mikuni & Keihins work, but it takes a lot of trial and error to get them right. I have a 28mm Amal I'm going to use on a 10hp as soon as I find a big enough minibike.

I have a couple of cool little Dellorto (NOS) #UAB16BS carbs, with velocity stacks, that I'm wiling to part with. They are complete with a universal T-cable. Tom.
