Rpm gauge

#1
Hey guys, so ive got an rpm gauge made for a car id like to setup to my motor, ive got it hooked up to a motorcycle battery and it lights up. to get an rpm signal theres one wire, the only way i can find to get a signal is to hook it directly to the spark plug wire so when i pull start it it shows that its working on the gauge, but the signal wire will take all the power so none gets to the spark plug, no other method works to get a signal that i can figure out

So where would i actually connect the signal wire to and still get power to the spark plug is basically what i need to know?

It's easier to use an inductive-coupled pickup from one of the small tachometers you can buy on Ebay. They are inexpensive and reasonably accurate though they do not continuously sample the rpm. You might get a sample every 3-5 seconds that is averaged which is plenty good enough for setting the idle rpm and other constant rpm checks.

Make sure you buy one for a four stroke single cylinder engine for best operation.

Did you try each side of the primary winding? I bought a motorcycle tach and it works on the kill side of the primary winding and does not affect the performance.
