Vintage Briggs

I have a rebuilt vintage 2hp Briggs, were the drive shafts on them 5/8" or 1/2"? Person I got it from said 1/2" but when I measured it edge to edge it looks more like 5/8".

Measure it with a caliper. No caliper? Check it with 1/2" and 5/8" open end wrenches (use like go/no-go gauges), not precision measuring but if an open end wrench won't slip over it, it's larger than the wrench size.

Big question is how vintage? Pic if you can its fun for all of us to see projects.
The early 5S and some 6S.were a 1/2 shaft...My mint 5S is a 1/2 shaft with a cute tiny belt clutch...
