Which Tecumseh?

#1
I have a basketcase Rupp Roadster 2 without an engine. I've had it for several years and now need an engine. I'm wanting to dig this old project out and get it going. I'd love to have a Tecumseh star but they are hard to come by. What model Tecumseh should I be looking for? H50, HS40, HS50? Do I need a 3/4" shaft or can a 1" work? Is there any variations I should stay away from?

If you're looking for original, you'll want an HS40 (1971-1973) with the extended crank (3/4")

Rupp used a 2-7/8" output shaft on all of their motors 1970 and later

If you're not going original, but want it to look right, any HS40 with a slanted intake (or diaphragm carb) from the early 70s will work. You'll need a lighting coil if you plan on running lights though

If original then great but I just want it to fit and run properly. It's not a lot of Tecumseh around so do I have to use the HS40 or can others such as HS50 or H50 also work?
