Wierd oil question

Ok last weekend I got my brand new 1999 briggs 5hp running fot the first time . I noticed the side cover was leaking, so I drain the oil out and it was black what gives here any ideas ? I'm thinking maybe because the crankcase breather was not hooked up . it ran maybe for ten min tops

The engine was ran before would be my guess,black oil is from beening dirty,some oils are darker than others also.Something tells me this was not a brand new motor,with the side cover leaking.

I agree with balljoint I have a feeling the engine has a little more time than 10min on it.

Then just put fresh oil in it after you fix side cover leak:freakout::freakout:

if the motor was brand new, it could be the rings were seating and the dark oil was because the the ring material was in the oil... did it have a metallic look to it in the light?

Well I figured out what it is the crank I put in is moving back and forth grinding the sump cover :censure: .

Paul you might need to use a thicker PTO gasket to take up the end play..

I'm giving up on the briggs for now I went to HF and got a clone for $89 today
