2024 engine options

#1
I need to replace a 196 clone motor on a knockoff "twister lite" outboard mud motor for my boat. I upgraded a few parts on it before I opened the case and saw that it had a plastic cam gear. F that! So now I'm looking around for a replacement motor. There's so many options these days, I'd bet there are some I don't even know about.

What should I look at getting ? A tillotson, a ducar, a 224?

I don't want a race engine, just something out of the box with a little higher rpms. I can't use sprockets, or a TAV to get higher speed, because the propeller shaft connects right to the crankshaft . I also like having the stock cube style muffler, I ran the old motor with a header and twist on muffler for a little bit, and it was a little too loud for spot hopping and sneaking up on fish. I don't need the motor to have a charging coil, or electric start. I'm more interested in it being light, simple, reliable, and of course most importantly the higher rpms.

What's the best choice these days?

Pretty much any coil limited box engine like a Tillotson 212r or Predator Ghost would work. They're all based off the Honda GX200 like your 196 clone is.

Thanks Fox! Are the coils all the same brand and specs? I've seen a few of them that say they rev to about 6k, which is probably just what I want. I'd be interested if there was a certain brand that the coil limiter is a few hundred rpm higher!

I've been looking for a spec comparison chart with no luck, does anyone know where I could find something like that?

Hp and torque are great, but like I said, Max RPMs is what I'm looking for.

I'm not sure about brand, but PVL makes almost all of them whether their name is on it or not. The coil spec can vary depending on if you buy something like a 212r or a specific class racing engine since you can get an LO206 with something like 5 different limited coils. However, most baseline engines that use a limited coil are 6k.

As for comparison of individual engines, I'm also not aware of a handy chart that encompasses many different brands. A lot of what I've seen has been people doing personal comparisons between 2 or maybe 3 different engines.

I honestly just don't like this particular engine, and I'm stubborn. It's a zhongshen according to the sticker, not much information about them from what I've searched. Everything on it seems low quality compared to my predator 212 on my minibike. It ran like crap stock, plastic cam gear, I had to set the valve lash 10+ times, there are lots of little imperfections all over it, it vibrates more than a 212, the choke sticker was misprinted, so choke is run, and run is choke. I could go on and on haha.

Also, two "mystery parts" fell out when I took the cover off. After I saw the plastic cam gear, I just quit on it, and took the performance parts off.
