3hp Briggs carburetor issues

#1
I have a 3hp briggs with a pulsa-jet carb. I bought it not running, and after removing carb, cleaning it, sealing diaphragm with gasket sealer, it runs. But, its very hard to start, sometimes it will idle good, sometimes it won't idle at all. When i give it throttle, it dies. This doesn't happen when the bike is up on stands with the rear wheel free to spin, as it runs nearly perfect on stands. After adjusting idle mixture screw, it ran well enough to ride. It ran crappy at half throttle, but once it reached higher rpm's it ran great and pulled strong. I came to a stop and the engine died. It wouldn't start after that. Just wondering if there's anyone that may know what's causing this?

Its possible it has an air leak, is it revving higher than normal? could be that sealer you used on the diaphragm making it hard to start

well it actually ran better after using gasket sealer, but i guess its possible it has an air leak
If you can get it running long enough ,spray some carb cleaner around every gasket from the carb to the tank. and listen for any change in the sound of the engine.

put a new diaphram in it first, if that gasket sealer melts and gets in the carb it will ruin it.
Take the carb off the tank and make sure that there is no rust in the well on the tank and make sure that the screens are clear.

Make sure the diaphragm cover is flat and not warped. Also sounds like it could have an air leak at the throttle shaft or cracked pick up tube. Good luck.

Briggs11411 did you put in a new diaphragm when you cleaned your carb or just goop in the old one ? you can not reuse the fuel pump diaphragm unless you just put it in like yesterday and stripp it down today . you also never want to use any gasket goop on the thing , the diaphragm is not very tolerant of crap smeared on it as it will deform it and cause nothing but problems .
