That's all I really know about the #s. That way you can tell at first glance what hp you're looking at. Other parts of the # probably tell ball bearing or plain, dates, etc. but I really never tried to find that out. The info is probably on here somewhere, but I've always been too lazy to look.:doah:

If the model # starts with 10, there's no use to look on the head. It's a 4hp. If the flywheel is the same diameter as a 5hp, you can cut the wire to the points and bolt on a magnetron coil. The Briggs part # is 397358. It will start easier and idle better.
I did not know that. I just got my new coil, points, and condenser.

Well, at least you'll have fire now. :thumbsup: I really like the old Magnetron coils best. The newer ones seem to go bad more often.
