advancing the timing

#1
i have a Tecumseh 6hp OHV

i plan on doing some modifications to it , one of those modifications are advancing the timing.

how much should i advance it? , are there any disadvantages or anything i should be aware of before doing this?

That motor doesn't have aftermarket advance offset keys. So you will have to shave your own. It' takes precise measuring, and precise grinding to do it right. Then you will have to make sure you torque the flywheel back on tighter then it originally came from the factory. If not it will shear the offset key off. This also depends on how much you shave off.

Do you know what ignition timing you have now?
Do you know how much you want to go to?
