Briggs Engine ID without correct Shroud??

#1
I have some Briggs engines that don't have the original fan shrouds. How can I identify what the HP is on these? The 4HP and 5HP I can tell from the head casting # (if the heads havent been swapped) and the recoil size, (if the recoil is original), but I have a 3HP and what I think is a 2HP and they have the same head casting #s. Then there's a 2 1/4, 2 1/2, maybe a 3 1/2, etc.
It seems like many of the 4HP and 5HP parts interchange, and maybe 2HP -3 or 3 1/2HP(if there is such a thing) would interchange.
Thanks.

Well, I know the 5HPs are model 13s so there is 13 stamped on the head and rod and other parts.

I think a 4hp is a Model 12 so there might be 12 stamped on certain areas.

Good Luck:thumbsup:

Briggs Engine ID w/o SHroud

Thanks for the help. I'll hang on to that chart, that's probably the best way to tell, as the head #s on engines from 3HP down seem to be the same. I think Briggs also had 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 HP motors, so I'll try and find one that size that I'm sure of and get the bore size for the chart ( I think I might be able to find a few around here).
Thanks!
