I have a 1972 MTD Columbia 523-2 with a 5hp Briggs & Stratton.

The main thing I'm looking for help on is brakes. It didn't come with any and I have no idea what to get/where to put it.

Between the brakes and sizing the chain from the motor to the crankshaft it'll be rideable. The rest of the work is cosmetic which I have the parts, until I decide it needs to go faster.

Try a band brake on the clutch.

Thanks for the quick response! I happen to have parts to a band brake. How would I attach it to the clutch? (can get images if you want)

And remember, you lose your chain, you have no brakes.

do you still have this funky looking bracket by chance? It may be reversed on that frame but they used the same style band brake around the one side of the rear wheel center:

I actually had that bracket. I wondered what it was for. I had to mount it a little differently but it should hopefully work. Just need a spring and cable.
