I got a FREE compressor!

I was cleaning the garage today, getting rid of some useless stuff that had been taking room for years and I found a big sheetmetal box far under the stairs.

It was heavy and extremely dusty. It had obviously been there for years. I opened the box and... there was an old cast-iron piston compressor inside!

My dad said he put it there more than 10 years ago and completely forgot it was there.

I will open it up this week to see if everything is in there and in good shape. Does anyone have info about this compressor? It has a bunch of numbers on it, a "made is USA" and a "CO" engraved on the side.

Cool find. I'm supposed to go to a friends this week to look at a 40 year old chain saw, supposed to have a big flathead engine. I remember my late father -in-law had one years ago with what looked to me at the time like a b&s.

I just sold an old Homelite chainsaw that was my dads. It was new in 1951, has a 4hp motor on it and the handle turns, along with the carb, so you can cut sideways. It is an awesome saw.

That compressor looks like a frige unit as said above, that someone converted into an automotive A/C vacuum pump.

I got the compressor running yesterday and it works! It needs a little bit of love but nothing is really wrong with it. A few gaskets, new oil and a valve overhaul and it will be like new.

I did some calculations about using it with a 3/4hp motor that I have. If I suppose a 85% mechanical efficiency, I can get about 1.5 CFM at 100 PSI. Nothing spectacular, but for a secondary compressor (I already have a compressor), it will be alright.
