Umm could you install a Z bend tiller? The offset would let you sit in the middle of the seat. Do the offset to which ever side you are more comfortable with controlling the motor with.

Oh that so cool.... kinda reminds me Bruce Mitchel off of the show Swamp people(a wicked show)....
He drove a Vanguard surface drive motor however....
He has a handle mounted to the right side and operate the motor with his left hand. he stands however......

Based on how typically people operate the types of boats like this.... balance wise Id probable stand and operate with a Z bend in the shaft to allow the good relaxed angle.

you could stand astride it jk .... a Z with a medium high seat and a hand bar too so when you stand maybe

Yeah some guys do straddle it. Man, that's a bit too much for me. I just don't like having that much weight at the back of the boat.
