Absolutely! 292/300/317/338 are all the same bottom end, just different bores.
Early ones had iron jug and rounded head, later were chrome bore alloy and square head.
Same jugs on twins make 600/634 units. Hot 338 porting is a bit much for the twin crank, but makes a wicked but fragile 676.
You are wanting to go in the air on a limited budget? That is scary! McCulloch 101's are going for big money these days! The vintage kart guys routinely pay over $1000 for one! Please be safe!
Check out the Whing DingII on Utube...That is my project and will use a one cylinder Hirth 292 CC 193-R4 if I can find a carb. and some other parts....
Oh, and we went from Mac to Hirth, but there are lots of used Yamaha 250 Enticer engines out there too. I can try to get a rough weight/size comparison to a Hirth, this week. I have one apart for rebuild. I'm thinking the Yam is 10-15lbs lighter than an alloy Hirth
Hirth was the most reasonable priced one I could find. Should be here tomorrow. Can't wait to see what I have to work with.. I made a propeller last week from a Birch log I cut last year. one solid piece no lamination..so far so good...
