Motor Help

#1
So I just got my Azusa kit back from powder coating and I started getting it back together. Well, I bought a new Honda GX160 for it and it fits, but I won't be able to put gas in it or keep my legs on the bike. Rookie mistake.

Can anyone recommend a motor that would fit nicely in the Azusa kit and still provide adequate HP but not be too big? I am thinking about a Robin Subaru EX13.

That bike of yours look real sharp. You could mount a remote tank and use the engine that you have. A nice polished round tank would really set that off, I think.
Or a nice Tecumseh would work real well in there also. Just a couple ideas.

Thanks Randy...I thought about going with a separate tank, but the dang motor still sits in there so wide. I eventually want my little boy to be able to ride it too and I'm thinking I might need a smaller engine. I guess you learn as you go. This is my first build.

I found a place that has some older model, but new Briggs 3.5 HP motors, but I don't know if that would be too underpowered for me to ride the bike. What do you think? I'm trying to find a new motor that has a good balance between size and HP.

A 3.5 Briggs will pull that around just fine. And in my opinion will look better also. I'm one of the few hold outs that believes a vintage looking bike should have a flat head. But if you can gear it around 12/66 or 12/72 it will have more then enough get up and go. Especially for a child. And it will pull you around as well.

Thanks... I am glad to hear that a 3.5 will do all right. I'm not trying to race anyone. I was worried, because I really do not like the way the Honda sits in there. It seems dangerous... there would be no hiding from the dang clutch and chain.

Unfortunately, I will have to eat a shipping and a re-stocking fee to return the motor.

Yeah a 3.5 is adequate for an adult, not overly fast but it should do the job. And it's a great engine for kids as well! I too believe vintage or even vintage style minibikes look better with a flathead engine, but everyone has thier own preference. A good 3.5 is affordable although a new old stock engine would be better suited to the new finish and rolling stock. You've spent a small fortune already, you might as well go for it! The GX can go in the next one you build for yourself so you can ride together!

I say get a 3.5 and refurbish it, take it apart and sand down to bare metal and then clean the grease off of everything using brake cleaner and a pressure washer/ wire brush and paint it with high temp paint. Then it will look good and preform well. And I haven't ever seen a a 3.5 briggs that won't run with some tuning and such.. I think its impossible..

No but, I have one on a Fox Sprite.
It is one of my favorite engines.
Thanks, I hope it fits the Azusa the way it fits your Fox with room to fill the tank. Im going to pull the Robin 4 HP from my sons Manco kart to use on the mini bike and look for a bigger engine for the kart (plus I need to straighten the front axle stub from when he kissed a tree:-( Nice looking bike by the way!
