stock valve spring retainers?

#1
I am running a cl1 dyno cam with 18lb. valve springs and im still using stock valves and valve spring retainers. I am spinning around 6300- 6400 rpms. Will the stock valves and retainers hold up to the capability of the cl1 cam and 18lb springs? Any advice was would be appreciated- i dont want to drop a valve. Thankyou.

The stainless Valves and a the ARC retainer kit is worth the money.

Not sure about the USA but for the money up here in Canada its actulay cheaper to use the Race parts than Honda, and they are better parts.

The 18 pound springs are actualy from a Honda G200 5 hp flat head.

I have dropped a valve and i would never ever use stock valves or retainers ever again the good stuff is cheap enough to call it money well spent. And the stainless valves flow way better.

I dropped intake valve recently, but later decided it was assembly error.

The retainers for exhaust and intake are different and I didn't realize it. I did a search on 4 cycle.com and it is rarely mentioned that they are different.

I installed the exhaust retainer without the lash cap on the intake side and it came off. After I realized what happen, I can see why. The exhaust retainer needs the lash cap to secure the valve stem.

If you are not aware exhaust and intake retainers are different, it is very easy to assemble wrong. The engine will run and probably not drop the valve unless you float the valve, then it will come loose.

I was lucky, didn't really tear up anything other than the intake valve and retainer, plus put a intake valve mark on the top of the piston. I knew something was wrong, engine just stopped running :doah:

Ok good information. I better check mine out. Im gonna upgrade the valve train anyways. I do remember checking how the lash cap fit in the retainer but didnt notice the difference between the 2 retainers- i had a handfull of retainers from a few engines so maybe i used 2 exhaust retainers. Thank you.
