They were there to kinda serve as protection for the engine as well as a place to put your feet. they marketed the Trail scout version as a compact trail scooter compared to some of the big tanker trail bikes of the really early 60's. They were just open bars originally, the diamond plate is someones custom touches. That one above might have been a super flea too, you see them with and without the hoop footbar on them.
