Ya know what I'm jelous of? Detroit!!

Always has been. I grew up in a northern Detroit suburb, in the 60s and 70s, and there were 5 mini bike and 2 go-kart owners on my block alone. A reel-type lawn mower didn't stand the chance of actually cutting grass for more than one season :)

According to dad around here mini bikes were never really popular. He always wanted one growing up but were poor, even if they would had got one he was #11 out of 12 kids so if he would have ever got his hands on it the thing would have been broke. He said the riding toys growing up had 4 legs and plowed the fields. Heck even today I have a horse instead of some ATV.

I think the rust belt is like mini bike mecca in the 50's & 60's due to the automotive industry. Lots of good paying jobs for the average non college educated person. When someone mentions "barn find" the lions share are in the rust belt.

^Yeah, I don't remember that ever happening in the 60s/70s in my area. Only thing being raced were Chevelles, Novas, GTOs, etc.. There was a go-kart track in Troy, MI in front of the airport with race action.
