7 speed gocart

hi guys, got an idea, the transaxle kart, a go kart with a transaxle, it would be oriented so the output shaft on the motor faces rearward and the input shaft on the axle faces the driver, can you guys see any obvious problems with this or do you think it might work

Sounds like you'll need a lot of fab work. Might cost you a lot of money. What you're talking about is a basic rear wheel drive car. Where are you going to get a 7 speed transmission?

well i wanna fab everything up, build time is minimum 8 months, its a lawnmower tranny, and im building it for my little bro who has nothing to ride

EDIT: im going to use autocad to draft it up first

Sounds neat, never thought about tipping a lawn mower transaxle over for use with a horizontal shaft engine. Good idea. Might have to make a new fill plug or something on the trans. Also, their probably not meant to be shifted while moving. You might be able to and make it last if your easy on it. You could use a regular disk type clutch with that setup.

I think it would work as long as the trans doesnt need to be oriented a certain way for lubrication purposes.

Is it an actual 7 speed trans? or does it have a 2 speed (hi/lo)+ reverse trans with a seperate 7 speed shift lever(belt vari-drive) ?

my bad, typo :doah: its 5 forward 1 reverse, im going to use a centrifugal kart clutch, its a grease lubed tranny so no need for a fill hole. and... WHAT????:scared: mr. modified never thought of doing this? lol i loved the hack job head!!!, any way still loking for a kart frame to use any suggestions on make or model?

its a fine idea. im going to be doing something similar but without a transaxle. im going to use the tine diff from an old snowblower as the axle. you might want to check out heymow.com they deal with the transaxles on their racing mowers. you can look up your particular model and learn to prep it to last longer.

thanks jeep, if anyone was wondering why not do a race mower, i want automatic gas and go ability, using the transaxle as more of a reduction box, when all said and done i want the kart to do about 45 in fifth, then when i see a steep hill or something drop that puppy into 1st and have power and a half

Are the gear ratio's spread out enough to allow a top speed of 45 and still have a low enough range to get some pull out of it?

I havnt looked at the gear ratio's close enough on tractors to see how they compare to other types of vehicles.

I guess we'll just have to see.

Keep going its interesting.(pictures....are there pictures)

i want a super low low low 1st gear for rock crawling, reverse could prove to be a little fast but with a centrifugal clutch that shouldn't be a problem, I'm thinking maybe even gear it for 50mph in high gear, i can just jam the gears from 4 to 5, so i dont burn the clutch out, im gonna put 18 inch tires all around too :punk::punk::gunsmilie::gunsmilie:

A lawn mower isn't going to crawl rocks. Not enough articulation.

its a go cart and i was just giving an example if i wanted a rock crawler id build one

EDIT: sorry didnt mean to have so much attitude in ther, i was thinking a crawler cart would be cool

The neighbor kids up the street while I was growing up had one with Atv tires all the way around.
Had a 3 speed transaxle 11hp (I think, it WAS BIG!) custom frame, two seater.
One could use a 40 series Torque converter to gain a clutch and more top speed, they can be ran horizontal, put it in 2nd and go!
