Briggs carb help

#1
Im putting my rupp continental back together with a briggs 3hp that has an updraft carb. i got it to fire up but only when it is choked. when you open it up it lurches forward then dies. i know there is an adgusting screw @ the bottom of the float bowl as well as the usual screw. it revs really slow when choked and its idle is kind of high. any sugestions?

alrite, Here it goes

This is going off of memory only

The bottom screw is your high speed, 2 and a 1/2 turns idle.

The two tops are the idle mixture, and idle speed. idle mixture is 1 and 1/2

set the speed by ear and so that it doesnt take off on you.

Engines will rev slow when choked, that is normal, your restricting it alot, and you are adding a hugely rich fuel mixture.

Has the carb been cleaned lately? and is the airfilter on and in good condition.

The passages and carb may have gummed up causing poor performance

** Idle scew note
-I believe that the idle speed adjustment is the one that is further towards the block, Im 600 miles from my manual and im going off of a bad scan and a set of notes

Hope that helps
