Briggs Starter Recoil

#1
Just finished assembling my bike after a complete teardown of my Raptor 2 engine. Loaded it up with a bunch of goodies: 94SS cam, billet flywheel, billet con-rod, .032 copper HG, the works. I have noticed that using the pull start takes a lot more effort and as soon as the engine catches and fires sometimes it will really snap the cord back (along with my hand that is holding on to it, ouch :cursing:).

I was wondering if this is a side effect of a higher performing engine or maybe my starter clutch is on the way out?

Thanks for all your insights!

PS - I already have a new starter clutch on the way! The original one is 5+ years old

flatheads get a lot harder to start with added compression, advanced timing, ect.... the best way to start them is roll the engine over by hand until you feel it come off the compression stroke and just start on the power stroke...then pull it to start.... it's sort of a pain this way but will save the fingers... or invest in a hand held elect starter.....
