Briggs & Stratton 60100 2 1/2 HP Ignition

Do we just snip kill wire off?
Nah, keep it, it's ignition wire. Just wrap the end with electrical tape or heat shrink, then roll the wire up tightly, wrap it again and hide it.

If someone has already added "regular" wire to it, yeah, cut that off. Try and retain any connector on the actual ignition wire though and insulate.

That is a kill wire that is connected to the points wire. While you CAN use the metal tab bolted to the head to ground out (kill) the engine, a much better (and safer) method is to use a handlebar-mounted kill button or switch. If that throttle suddenly sticks wide open when you are going full-bore on your bike it might be a real "challenge" to reach down and push the metal tab to kill the engine while trying to keep control of the bike. I would wire up a kill button or switch.

Let me figure this part out first:

When you get a nice new coil from Briggs & Stratton.

Does it really come with this long small gauge wire?

It's 4 or 5 feet long and to make it even edgier it's clear insulated so

I'm always thinking what if insulation wears off?

It's not easy to spot no insulation when it's clear.

It looks 'Mickey Moused' in there to me until I find out different.

If it is a OEM Briggs "Magnetron" coil (i.e., for a no points/condensor engine) they do NOT come with a kill wire pre-attached. The side of the coil will have a male spade bit where you can secure the female end of your kill wire to.

Thanks.

Email alerts aren't getting through.

Well. It's going bye bye for the time being.

For one thing it runs into points through bent up spot on points cover.

That cover IS getting straightened out before being put back on.

When time comes I'll do it right and drill hole through cover, etc etc.

Any of these outfits have Racing points or is there a heavy duty set of points to get for this?

Thanks.

'Surgery' all done.

Kill wire went through hole in condenser post.

Stock coil lead was facing out and kill wire was in there the other direction.

Just pulled it out with needle nose. All gone!

Points look pitted.

Will use new condenser and points we picked up at NAPA a while ago.

Then see if it will throw spark.

Looks like a little 'speedbump on the highway of life' first.

What are some good ways to compress the little spring on the condenser?

Need to do that to put coil lead wire back through.
