Gasket compound

#1
I'm fairly new to the whole engine restoration thing. Just wondering what peoples thoughts were on gasket sealant stuff such as Hylomar universal blue. Should it (or something similar) be used all the time, or only when a metal/paper/etc gasket isnt used? Can it be used just on its own?

Normally a sealant is used only when a mating surface does not use a gasket. That means, when the parts were DESIGNED to not use a gasket, not to use sealant instead of a gasket. When a machine uses a gasket the thickness of the gasket is accounted for in the design, so when you use sealant instead of the correct gasket the tolerances will be off.
