how to test a hs40 ignition coil

I have a 1971 hs 40 with no fire I removed the flywheel and sanded the points put it back together and it fired once and hadn't fired sense I'm a automotive mech so I have some understanding of how the system works but I'm not sure how to test the coil and mabey its the condensor . Would also like to know what the points set on thanks Eddie

the points should be set to .020"

Check your ground wires and make sure they're not short circuiting somewhere. My latest HS40 build gave me lots of headaches before I got it running strong, and one of the issues was the nut on the bottom of the stater that holds all the wires in place came loose. Once I tightened it, it ran fine.

Because the voltage is intermittent, it's hard to get a reading off of a volt meter, or at least it was in my case. You can pull the spark plug and hold it against the block while you're turning the engine crank with a drill (you have to remove the pull-start for this) and check for spark that way.
