I want powder, BUT....

I want to have my mini powder coated, but the local shops are asking $175-$250 to blast, prep, and coat. Thats what I got from five local shops. Man, I was expecting no more than $80...

Guess I will be breaking out the Dupli-Color rattle cans

I'm sure it will look great either way  ... It's a lot easier to touch up with the rattle can ... I got lucky and found a guy on CL that powdercoats the frame and fork for $60 ... He does dang good work too ... Post some pics before and after paint ...

80-120 are the prices around L.A. for basic blast and coat. More with clear coat and pearl and other special finishes.

Powder Coating is ok, but it has it's drawbacks. It is tough, but when water gets underneath to the steel, it will pop up the powdercoat. Then what. Re coat or strip it off and paint.

yea i guess its all about the prep work. I bought a yard sale bike that was powdercoated. Seeing the results on that makes me not want a powdercoated anything. Could have just been a bad job i suppose but i didnt like how thick and flakey it was

Bad powdercoat work is very obvious

I had found a local guy to do some powder work, brought him the pedals off my kart and when I saw the results walked away and would never trust him with anything else. I think I could of handed my 12 yr old son a can of krylon and ended up with a better job.

That's about the same Price that the Local Powder Coater Shops around my area want to charge, just to Powder Coat my Azusa Frame. I don't think so. Can spray is just fine with me.

175-200 is not bad to blast it, prep it and coat it.... at all. Most mini bike frames are a royal PITA to clean, blast & prep for powder.

I've done several over the past few years.

Here's my last batch fresh from the p-coaters:

Youve got a point. Its not like its a car panel that there blasting. Only thin tubing, so I can imagine the waste as far as the media... But this build is for me, and Im not looking to sell it or restore it back to its original state. Besides, with all the jokers around me that want to ride the damn thing. Rattle can touch ups will be in order

That's a lot of $ for a basic color and paint. Here in AZ the basic blast and podwer coat for a mini is about $100. If you want a specialty metallic color and/or clear coat then expect $150-$200. But a basic color and sand blast is about $100. I'd keep looking around...you might be able to find your $80-$100 prive range.

Despite what some on here say, there is NOTHING that compares to powder coat! A good job with clear coat looks better than paint, lasts longer and doesnt chip very often. It's the only way to go, if you want the true professional look for a semi-reasonable price. I've had them done various ways, from Dupli-color cans, professional house of kolors paint and powder coat and I'd go PC hands down anytime. A professional paint job with high end paint is just too damn expensive, and still wont last as long as PC. That's my 2cents...

Yeah I would too for a rider. I ride mine, in the woods, street, mud. Rattle can is the way to go. Don't know if you have a Hobby Lobby around. They have a good modeling section and carry rattlecan Boyds colors, metalics and metalflakes if ya want to get a little fancy.
