Kiwi Tru Test Rebuild - It's only missing brakes!

#1
I'm another kiwi, with another Tru Test. The story up until now - My brother and I had this when we were kids (in the late 80's early 90's). Unfortunately I don't have a before picture, but needless to say it was in poor condition after spending the last 15 years under mum's shed. I decided to pick it up and rebuild it over the last month or two for my wee girl as I ride motorcross and would love to get her into it. I'm riding it a bit more than her at the moment, as she is just on 6 months haha. Might be a few years till she gets her go.

The first thing I did was get to work on the 3 hp Tecumseh. We could never remember why we stopped using it, but after splitting the case the conrod that was in two pieces explained a lot. I priced up all the replacement parts at about $130NZ from Ebay, but in the end ended up getting a 4hp Briggs and Stratton for $100NZ.

Next I tore down the max torque clutch, media blasted, POR-15'd and put it back together. The springs are a little weaker than factory, but still do the job.

The frame I again blasted, mig'd up a few cracks, ground her back and then had the boys at work repaint it WRX blue, which is fairly close to the colour it originally was. Didn't straighten up the foot pegs, but will do after my little girl, and me, have finished crashing it!

The chain was orange and solid. I soaked it in a container of EVAPORUST for 24 hours, soaked it in 30w oil for 48 hours, and it came out like a new one. The #35 chains are hard to get in New Zealand.

The wheels are original, and have just been cleaned up. Tires are original, but have a place to buy new ones locally. The wheel bearings need doing, will do them when I change the tires over. The sprocket has been blasted and POR-15'd, new grips, new throttle, had to make the cables as I couldn't find any long enough. I stripped the seat down, painted the base, put down a dual layer foam (hard bottom, soft top) and recovered it with some material off an old seat.

She goes great, has heaps of grunt (still governed at the moment), but has a major drawback. The brakes - I can't find pictures of the originals, all I know is that the original used the sprocket for braking. I have got a pit bike brake and modified the crap out of it to fit. It slows the bike, but is in no way good at braking.

So...... to all the kiwis on here, the last bit I need is a picture of, or even better the original brake to copy. So if you can help, that would be great!

Pictures as she looks at the moment. May be at Desert Storm next month as our pit bike I think!

(Sorry for the short novel)

Cheers,

Ed

Cheers for the comments boys, found another one of these the other day, but the prick said I couldn't look at the brakes unless I was interested in buying the bike.
