Predator 224 upgrade

#1
Listen. I know this has probably been asked before. But here we go..
Do I have to remove governer( which means saving money for billet flywheel rod and spring)
Before I install a vm22 carb and upgrade air filter?
The carb as y'all know requires governor bypass...
Don't hate me to much please

The governor gear inside the case is probably a plastic gear and metal weights. If you spin it past governed rpm’s those internal parts will break and then everything will break and then you need a new engine..

BUT here’s the punch in the gut.. Now that you have that new engine and carb kit you still have to go get at least a flywheel.

I don’t have a week stomach and I have never seen a flywheel explosion just straight up **** somebody. With all this new China stuff that’s glued and screwed I’m waiting for the videos to start showing up.

Yeah I understand about the governer coming apart and messing up my predator. But what if I remove it and keep the throttle stop screw at about halfway (just a guess. I don't have a tach) to keep the rpms from reaching to high?

If you want to remove the governor just get a flywheel. Then add your carburetor..

Be mindful of the rpms until you get a rod? In my opinion ANY damage caused by over revving the stock parts is going to be catastrophic at best.

Get a tach. I like the $20 tach with the max RPM recall function.

A few months ago I wanted to have some fun and put a VM22 clone on a stock 196 with a header pipe and mini 91 silencer. I used a small bracket bolted to the head for the governor arm spring. There was no concern about too much RPM because it's limited by engine power and gearing. I was looking for which main jet gets the highest RPM at full throttle in 90-foot runs. 4200 RPM isn't going to break anything. Even if I put the bike on the road I wouldn't expect much higher than 4500 RPM at top speed. The OD function from the torque converter will limit RPM.

This was also tested with a 224 muffler. There was no noticeable difference in power versus the header pipe. Max RPM was the same.

I wouldn't recommend that anyone do this unless they have a solid understanding of what RPM they will turn.

Pictured is the 14-year-old 196 Greyhound with the 224 muffler. The bike was just as fun as my other more powerful engines.

You keep saying things like "yeah, I understand about...." and asking questions that prove you do not understand.
I think your question has been answered a couple of different ways. Have you gotten a satisfactory answer?

IMHO.......higher rpm is NOT more power!!!!!

I will put my GOVERNORED Ducar 212 at 5300 rpm MAX with a stock appearing carb against...ANY 212 with a slide carb in a 600 ft straight run. And i don't really give 2 flying fuk$ what kinda rpm that pos CLAIMS it'll run.
The more rpm they CLAIM... jus means the more $ I will take from that SO CALLED high rpm pos.

Probably this and probably that..... is total bs. There's no PROBABLY about it....you either KNOW or you flat out DONT KNOW!!!!!!

Throw that junk chinese crap in the trash.

You wanna haul a$$, and stay with it for the long haul?????
Stop wasting you hard earned $ on bs and get with Jerry Dover.

There's more to this.

Is the OP still running a straight chain on a Coleman?

With that gearing there's no need for a slide carb and governor removal. If you don't want to do an engine build then put a 31 jet in the stock carb and back the throttle screw out. That should get to around 4500 RPM.

How fast do you want to go? 4500 RPM should be around 50 MPH, if it doesn't top out sooner. Let's say that you get a slide carb and it tops out a bit higher. Will that be enough road speed?

In post #1 there's a screenshot of an $85 carb kit. Similar kits are $40 on Amazon.

That's a good question and good advice.
Is this bike still meant for your kids to ride?
