Rupp Original Clutches or Other?

#1
As per my prior post I bought a 1970 Enduro. It is missing both the drive and driven clutch. I like the idea of going back to the original clutches and have found them on ebay, but I am concerned about getting a drive belt. Is the original drive belt a "V" or a "\|" ? I have read posts where guys sourced other belts, but they didn't fit just right, but still seemed to work fine. Then I see guys keep the driven but change out the drive to a comet 20, and machine it a bit for full shift. I also like the idea of using a comet 20 drive and driven, and a comet belt and be done with it. Looking for some real work opinions by folks that have solved this problem.

if you find the right drive and driven, you can get the right belt. I have a link for a Gates belt thats pretty much the same one they used originally. Obviously you cant get an original anymore. Actually, I have 2 belts that are compatible with the Rupp, neither one worked for shit on my bike. The only thing I can get to work is a 5/8" x 26 inch belt I got for like 10.00. it doesn't have the grooves in it or anything, but for some reason, the ones that are supposed to be on there, dont work. I can give you links for both if your going in that direction. if your gonna get a Comet Driver, I think I might have the link for that belt also. basically the original was like 5/8" by 27 1/4" or something? I have a pic some where that show the original belt lined up to the gates and something else. I'll try to find it.

heres the gates belt GATES Part # 6061

and the comet Comet Industries Belt 200419 (A-DF) Go Kart Belt, Comet 883-70, Comet 40/44 Series Belt, Used in Snowmobile, Golf Cart, Scooters, and ATV's

heres the generic one I use 5L260, 5LK260, 5L260K Kevlar Super Duty Belt 5/8" x 26" | eBay

Looked at the 20 and 30 series clutches. The driven clutch ramps are on the inside for the 20 series, and on the outside for the 30 series. The original rupp secondary was on the inside, so it appears that a 30 series clutch will not align properly, and the 20 series secondary is the way to go. I have a set of 20 series (I think) I can play with that go on my super bronc. I am going to tinker with those to see if the 20 or 30 is the right one. Can get a belt measurment also. Dont want to buy something that will not work out. Details details details.

Yes. I was thinking of doing the bottom one, since I need both clutches. I could be happy with the top one also.
well for the top one you need the Rupp driven. if you dont have it, and have to buy both comet parts, they're not cheap and could run you up to around $200.00. what type of shape is the clutch in? If it's in reasonably good shape, you could just as easy get a sprocket and run the jackshaft as it is, just with chains instead of a belt. it's been done before by a few guys!!!

is it gonna be ready for the show room with a clutch set up, no. will you be able to ride the hell out of the thing..... yes!

jrzmac, those are pictures are helpful thanks. I have thought about the chain drive setup, but like the idea of the increased torque and no loss of top end that will come with the CVT. If I can go that route that would be my first choice. I think I am going to go either comet/rupp or full comet. I just missed a rupp drive and driven on ebay for 100 bucks buy it now. I need to play around with the 20 series clutches I have laying around and see how things line up, but they need to go back on my super bronc so I need to buy a set eventually.

JACKShaft setup

JRZMAC- I know its a old thread.

How would I go about setting up jackshaft like the orange bike in the 4th picture. Would I need the Rupp jackshaft bearings? Then a 5/8" threaded jackshaft. I kind of assuming like a custom length. Don't know if it need to be have a keyway. Not sure if there's set collars on there too. Then sprockets on both sides.

Any Help would be great.
