it was built probably in the late 40s to early fifties. looks like a 2 cycle engine. I have a few old Toro mowers

If you research the serial numbers off the Lauson engine, it might help determine the age. I see a tag on the mowing deck. What does that read?

I love old reel mowers. Using the handy Google search feature, I looked at Wikipedia, Smokstak and a few other sites. All I could find was that Unico was associated with Southern States Cooperative stores, and that MTD acquired Unico in about 1958. Your mower looks older than that, so it sort of makes sense. I sort of hit a dead end at that point. Like OPEtech says, above, your best bet will be to try and date the engine from its numbers and figure it's the same age as the mower.

That's a 4 cycle Lauson according to the tank decal, a neat old mower though for sure.:thumbsup:
