have any recommendations for a decent 6x48 belt sander for grinding and forming metal? most of the lower priced ones say they are just for wood. the jet ones are nice but very expensive.

my Dad built me a beltsander, it's 3x48.. I get 6x48 belts at HF and rip them in half so I get two belts out of 1.....I use this thing all the time... It's a stand up and not a horizonal..

I have a vertical 1 inch X 48 inch with a 9 inch disc and it gets a work out when welding is happening I never thought of needing a 6 inch wide belt. And I never use the 9 inch disc.
I imagine a bigger belt would have it's advantages but I would not give up the one I have . And yes Jet does make some nice equipment.

You could make your own out of a drill motor, some plate, a couple of wheels with bearings and some miscellaneous stuff.
