Chain problems ?or something more?

A friend of mine picked up A Alexander Reynolds minibike on Craigslist.since we are having a heatwave in Cleveland we thought we would take it out for a spin.with the throttle wide open the chain bounces aggressively and eventually falls off. We moved the engine forward to tighten the chain (not making it to tight ) then the chain ended up breaking.The chain could've been old?but I thought I'd ask about the bouncing aggressively situation.any suggestions? Thanks

Hard to tell but, if it broke that easy, time for new chain.
And make sure it is lined up straight from front to back.

Another possibility is you had a couple of frozen/stiff links causing it to bounce off clutch and rear sprocket. I've had this occur mostly with the rear sprocket. This is why I buy my chain in 10' rolls from TSC and alway keep several extra master links around.
But I'm sure you won't have time today to mess with it seeing how we've got 4-5" of snow coming down AGAIN lol
