Chain spins but the back wheel doesnt?

Hey guys new user, first post.

I bought a 49cc motor scooter and I got it to start but when I pull the throttle the chain spins, but the back wheel doesnt move? It spins the sprocket on the wheel. Any ideas what the issue could be? I don't know much at ALL about small engines or mini bikes.

Hey @Poppacaps welcome to the Oldminibikes.com forum.

I'd look at the sprocket on the wheel, and see what it is supposed to be attached to. It's probably missing some fasteners.

Oh wow sorry for the late reply, I wasn't getting notified of activity. I'll upload pics when I get off work but I took the back wheel off and the sprocket spins freely on the wheel. There are several bearings and what not, like I said I'm out of my element.

rear sprocket should be bolted to adapter on rear rim. that part may be broken.

What do you mean by that? Sorry I'm basically mechanically illiterate.

So it's bolted in but the mount spins as well.

sprockets dont spin freely on rear axle, they turn rear wheels. what you have there is jacked up

I'm going to take a guess and say someone put a front rim on it or possibly the weld is broken.
Does it have a plate behind the sprocket that's welded to the hub like this one?
What is the sprocket bolted to?

I don't see one either, I assume it's internal

That would make sense given that wet clutch / gear reduction / transmission might not free wheel.

Yeah seems like an odd design to have a one way clutch on the driven. Its only purpose would be to save the clutch from the potential stress of engine braking.
