Gilson Trail Bike Build...Resto well kinda sorta, maybe

Pete is the gas cap vented ? do you think with the gas tank setting that high on the bike...that its forcing fuel past the needle valve ?
Is this the same engine that was in the run video ? It sounded ok in the video ..didn't it ?

I liked to have never have figured it out....but it was the gas cap not vented !
I bought a new Briggs cap for the tank that was not vented, so I drilled a 1/16" hole in it. I didn't rule it out, so I reinstalled the cap that was on the tank originally. Still had the issue. Even tried it with no cap and then the fuel cut-off "off." Didn't run any better. It could well be the needle valve is not seating and fuel is just flooding in. I can change it out and swap main jets and see what happens before I pull the motor and check the timing. I've read a bunch of different forums tonight to see if I can find a clue. Worst case, I get another carb.:doah:

Brain F@rt!!!!!!--She's off Life Support

I was worship leader this morning and I like to get a good night's sleep so I'm on message....not last night! I kept processing through options and what OND suggested above. So it dawned on me sometime around 4 am that if I can get the throttle assembly off the "correct" H60 carb and transfer it to the "wrong" H60 carb (that operated properly), that might solve the problem(s). The little screw can be a pain to get loose on the butterfly and I was hoping that I had properly atoned for my sins and the screws came loose. They did!

Once the parts were transferred, I mounted the "wrong" carb, adjusted the governor and, as always, started on first pull. took about an hour of fiddling, but I seem to have it balanced out and this baby screams. What a torque monster! The TAV is smooth as silk and the bike is fast as the dickens (and I didn't open it all the way up)!:scooter::laugh: Still have some adjustments to make: shaft collars, chain tension and the band brake needs work. But it's smooth as silk and a blast to ride. IMG_3358.jpg IMG_3357.jpg

Here's a video of it on the stand:

Now thats what I'm talking about .... Cool Beans Pete...and don't forget the wheelie poppin video !
I'll need to drag my wife outside...and find my helmet before I do a wheelie! Thanks for your suggestions....got my brain working overtime. This bike is somethin' else. I compared to a video of Copperhead (with a GC190)....no comparison. I'm gonna have to figure out an easier way to make the TAV brackets: The GC190 would love it.

That's a clean build can't wait for the rmore de video
thank you. Learned a lot from the pros over the last 2 yrs!

looking real nice pete.
factory style header pipe would look real good and run and sound cool too.......
Going to have to wait a bit, Brian. I need to mock up some options and talk to Mr. Wulf. It'll be a tight fit to swoop a header around to the outside of the frame.

Finished...for now

The Trail Bike is finished except for the head plate, a draft of which is below. Brakes now work, though I really need to swap the band as it doesn't have the stopping power a new band will have. I ended up making a new bracket for the cable sheath out of angle iron to eliminate any play in the sheath/cable.

The TAV cover got tricked out today. CarPlayLB sent me a surprise in the mail which included Gilson decals. I sprayed a black pearl background which mirrors the original, and applied the dry transfer decal. 3 coats of clear came next.

Really finishes the TAV cover nicely.

Special Thanks: Many parts were made to bring the bike back to life. John Jewell Architectural Metals did the welding. Advanced Coating Solutions suggested the Neon Mellow Yellow and did a beautiful job coating the bike.

Delray provided the bike (at Windber)

Harley's Poppa passed on the 1970 Tecumseh H60.

Gammatag offered up the 323 fork assembly for the new springer front end

RCGuy and UnorthodoxCreations willingly sent me dimensions for the TAV Driven Brackets

Control4userguy helped me with drive ratio calculations (along with a lot of teasing)

Capguncowboy for his helpful Tecumseh timing how-to

Manchester1 did her stuff and delivered an awesome seat

CarPlayLB surprised me with the decal for the TAV cover and, amazingly, the correct chain guard for the bike (different than the 525) and a very cool billet engine/belt tensioner (saved for the next build)

If I missed anyone, my apologies. And thanks to those who responded to my Ring Gap query in the Tecumseh sub-forum.
Here's the draft of the head plate. As is my practice, since the bike is from Wisconsin, I used a Badger in the design.

Pete, I am more than happy that you saved that H60 from just sitting on a shelf in my shop collecting dust  I am also happy that you have come to the dark side and done a mini cycle

Randy, I learned a lot with that motor. Timing an engine was never easy when I was teaching this stuff (we didn't have all the tools--ohm meter???) and ring gapping was a new experience. This bike is bat crap quick, too.

Eric, you got that right! The more I'm involved with a project, the more folks step up with suggestions and help. This has been the best "therapy" I've had in years!
