My mower project

#41
My monthly progress report:

Finally decided to take some pics before it is 100% done. It is about 80-85% now. Still waiting for the belt that goes from the engine to the trans input.

I pulled the cord probably 100 times before I realized the throttle had to be open a bit due to the shutdown contacts there. Next pull fired like a freight train and black smoke everywhere. That cleared up and then started running pretty good. Carb leaks and it may be cracked. Not sure yet. It is a slow leak, but there.

Hey Dave, What carb did you use on the gote motor?

VHT header paint on the muffler didn't survive. Guess I didn't put it in the oven long enough.

I am looking for someone to reproduce the "Grabber" logo decal for the front. Not much interest from the local sign makers.

On to the pics:

And now 90% done. Still waiting for the belt, a new throttle cable, and to fix the seat. It is coming away from the base. Just have to clean it up and reglue it down. No tears or cracks, so going to reuse it. The mower is missing the belt guards for the engine and mower deck, and I haven't made em yet. I have been looking for originals without luck.

I should have taken the earlier pics in the grass, where she belongs.

Thanks all!

I will get a vid of her chucking grass once I get the missing belt and the seat fixed.

The wife asked me again why I did this. I don't have a yard big enough for a rider really. I didn't have a good answer ready, other than I like it. I like the Simplicity of it, how it is so basic and yet will still work hard.

Who needs a mower?

Success! The wife is sick in bed, so I ran the mower in the backyard.... It might be a bit loud...

No action video since she is in bed, but pics...

Lots of grass stuck to the tires. Wonder why?

Someone didn't pick up the dog crap before mowing...

Still need to adjust the pedal a bit, clutch not engaging quite right. Otherwise, it powered through the thickest grass I had in the yard.

Also, don't sidehill this mower, it starts drinking oil out the breather. Kinda fogged the neighbors.

Sweet Stang! I fwd'd this project log to my brother in Michigan, him n his 3 boys (say!) they are rebuilding a lawn tractor, thought it might help/inspire/cajole them to action. Nope. Shit everywhere. They did not even clean off one part. Didn't even read the log:doah: oh well can't help da ignant.

Yup, next time do the doo first:laugh:

Really nice job Don, your attention to detail is spectacular. The belt configuration is something else. Do you have the piece/guard for the blade discharge? I got ran over by one of these mowers when I was 6 or 7 and seeing this brings back some painful memories.

Thanks, I think...

I do not have the discharge deflector or either belt cover. Otherwise complete. Only minor things not original, SS bolts and nuts, throttle cable, shroud on engine..

Speaking of the side deflector, without it, this thing chucks grass. It sent quite a bit into the pool even though I was 15 feet away from it. Wife was pissed cleaning the clippings out of the pool.

BTW, shortly after the pic was taken, he marked it. Pissed all over the right rear tire. Guess he likes it.

And now that it is done, I don't really have a yard big enough to actually use it like it was meant to be used. As such I will be listing it on my local CL, unless someone here wants it. I am not letting that friend use and wreck it again.

This project was really an in between/filler project. I didn't have a bike I wanted to build yet, and I hate not having a project to work on. Just the way I am.

Thanks Owen.... I don't poo in the yard. Never got that drunk yet.

I try to pick up the poo, but they always crap one more time after I pick it up. I usually will pick it all up, then mow the front, then the back. That is when they sneak one in, while I mowing the front...
