SoCal Motor Bicycle Race may include Mini Bikes?

#1
Hey All

Are any of you SoCal guys into motorized bicycles as well as Mini Bikes?

I organized the first Motorized Bicycle Race in SoCal at the Willow Springs go kart track last June 18th 2011.

The next SoCal Motor Bicycle Race is on Saturday Oct 22nd at Grange
Race Track in Apple Valley, CA.

I am thinking about including Mini Bikes at this race so I am here to see
what interest there is and if it will be a good fit.
To give you Mini Bike guys two 5 lap heats and a 12 lap final race I would want to get at least 15 entries, preferably 20.

Here is what the track looks like.
We are going to ride the track counter clockwise.

I talked to MiniBike Paul and was going to post the race in Events.

Just wanted to be polite by posting in the intro first to see what kind
of interest there was in racing Mini Bikes on a paved track.

How do those small wheels and knobby tires handle cornering on asphalt?

What top speeds would Mini Bikes hit on the 950' front straight?

How many of you CA guys are going to be at the Sept Camarillo Fun Run?

Well for that course I would put on round street slicks . It should handle great.
At 950 feet I think like 60mph for my bike. I'll be at camarillo too.

im sure including me and my bro we could have about 4-8 riders for sure out there!
it depends on the regulations, like what type of clothing or safety rules must we abide to, that would be good to know!

OK, I am going to start a thread in Events.

It's a specialized motorized bicycle race event so the safety equipment
and rules are not very strict.

DOT helmet or better.
Eye protection.
Gloves.
Elbow and knee pads.
Ankle high footwear.
Long pants LOL no shorts.

I guess not too many Mini Bikes have front brakes?

There were a few motor bicycles using 4 stroke engines like
this tilted upright modified 6.5 hp Harbor Freight.

There were two 5 hp Briggs and Stratton bikes with more
coming this Oct race. See the pic below

Here are two 5 hp Briggs bikes and a 66cc 2 stroke Chinese kit bike at the
first Willow Springs race last June 18th.
You can see what kind of safety equipment they are wearing.
#11 guy on the left should be wearing knee pads. He won the 4 stroke
class. His grandfather #12 was 2nd.

6in round tires handle great, but as you all know its all in the set up, frame clearance tire pressure, frame and steering geometry etc.

like goose said maybe 60 in the straights but remember theres alot of turns, gearing sometimes is more important on road courses cuz you need to be able to accelerate good out of corners and have decent top speed in the straights, so thats what make its fun also, tryin to figure out the right combo. as with drag and any racing.....being the fastest

im sure there will be a good handful of us attending the fun run.

and as far as safety rules im guessing basic drag rules i would think. helmet, gloves, long sleeves ,leather, hi tops, knees pads and elbows if desired.

Nice one, who all going?
thats up to you ? can you spread the word and see who might be interested. give the drag guys a second racing option. i think more guys with minibikes can participate and have fun than just watching cus there not as competitive drag racing.

what do you think ?

would love to see big blocks, oh dang torque converters would be the ticket on a road course...

i dont think tc's would be good on a road course, i think 1/8 mile gearing would be best with a disk or drum clutch
