West Bend 820 - Fuel Ratio/mix

#1
What is the most appropriate gas to oil mix for a Vintage Chrysler/West Bend 820 engine?

This particular Chrysler/West Bend mini bike application calls for a 1/2 pint oil for every 1 gallon gas. (1/2 pint = 8 fl oz). So, I added 16 ounces of Spectro 2 cycle oil in a 2 gallon gas can of 91 non-oxy fuel. Upon using this fuel mixture I have found there to be an abundance of oil/fuel coming from the exhaust(too much!!). The amount of smoke created is also significant. I realize this is the nature of 2 stroke engines, but the amount of unburned fuel coming from the exhaust leads me to believe the fuel mixture can be adjusted to use a significantly less amount of oil.

I have read another 820 document that said to use 1/3 pint oil for every 1 gallon gas(24:1), which is less oil than currently running and means I can reduce the amount of oil some....but how much?

I simply want it to not leak oil from the exhaust, smoke less, and still be a safe ratio for engine longevity.

Does anyone have first hand experience on the best fuel mix for these engines?

I do not have a West Bend, but I do have some old smokers. Does your engine run well? good throttle response?
It sounds like your carb might be a little rich. Two of my old Jacobsens had tags stating they need 1/2 pint of 30 wt. Two of them said they needed 1/4 pint 30 per gallon. I split the difference and add 6 oz 30 wt non detergent oil per gallon. The non detergent oil seems to leave some soot, but no greasy slime all over the place.

The thing is those instructions are from the old days when they used regular motor oil. The new 2 cycle oils that are considered premium use anywhere from 32:1 on up to 50:1 ratios. I would ask an expert rebuilder what oil they recommend and what ratio. Also, if thats one of my engines, I want it back. I DON'T mind a little smoke.

I've learned that the engines with bearings on the crank will tolerate modern, thin, lean-ratio oils, like the Amsoil 100:1 and the TCW3 stuff.
Bushing crank engines need some oil in the mix for cushioning and lube/ cooling. I think your WB has bearings on the crank. If that is true, you should be able to use some of the modern AIR COOLED 2 cycle oil at a leaner mixture. I am not an expert.
I use motor oil in my bushing engines and Amsoil Sabre at 50:1 in my ball and roller bearing engines.

Your older air cooled 2 strokes were designed for rich oil ratios. Some old smokers ran 16-1 ratios. Modern engines and current metallurgy and liquid cooling allows leaner oil ratios and different oils. Your drippy spooge from exhaust is unburned oil/fuel residue. Running a modern oil ratios and modern high flash point synthetic oils are simply not workable for older air cooled smokers. If it were my motor I would run specified premix ratio and continue using the golden spectro oil. If you wanted to try to help exhaust spooge mess, you can try lower flash point premix. Klotz and Maxima both offer a castor/bean oil 2 stroke premix oil. Bean oils offer best possible engine protection and have much lower flash point to allow cleaner burn......and it will make your exhaust smell fanfuckingtastic....

I appreciate the responses!

For what it's worth, I've been using Spectro "2T" and not the Spectro "Golden 2T".

Per the bold text above, you would simply do nothing differently other than what I've been doing?

Yes I want to try to help exhaust spooge mess! I realize the oil coming from the exhaust is unburned oil/fuel.....

I am very open to trying Klotz bean oil (I am familiar with the lovely scent from snowmobiling). Like I said I want to try something different as the current mix ratio and potentially the oil produce far too much smoke and unburned oil.

Good info, thanks Auggie! I think the name ofn the oil I used to run in my Montesa was called Blenzal and it was basically castor oil. Your right about the smell. It was great.

Had several metal quart cans of Blendzall and Yamalube squirreled away in storeroom for many years and discovered them a few years ago. No need for them anymore as I have long since retired from racing 20+ years ago. Put those old full oil cans on ebay for an offer. Got $60.00 each for them without delay. One was bid over $100.00
