Engine Scoop Idea

yeah im sure i can find something, ill probably end up soldering it since thats something i have available, im just hoping it'll stand up to vibration. we shall see I guess. :scooter:
solder can hold up pretty good but you do need to give it some room to bite in . i soldered the copper tab back on the alum winding in the starter on the gutless its held up for a while .
soldering alum is a pain to do tho you need to have it really really clean . you also need special solder , it can not have any lead in it or forget it will not stick at all . a 91% Tin 9% Zinc is what is recommended i have used a 95 5 tin antimony (plumbing solder lead free ) with fair results . you can not use any common flux on it no acid core or acid paste .
what i do is heat the joint and rub on some solder then with a small pick keep scratching the joint with the solder melted on it . doing this breaks up the crap on the metal and lets the solder bind to the metal . not a great way to do it but it works . there is a special flux for doing alum its Superior No.1260 Superior No.1260 Aluminum Soldering Flux
i have never used the stuff myself but have talked to the company and they say it works grate and works on pot metal too . ive been thinking about getting some to play with one of theses days .

Sounds good, ill ask my automotive teacher if he has any.

update.. im changing my idea one last time... because im afraid my design is gonna have trouble with strength (between bolt tightness and vibration).. and its gonna be tough to replace air filters when needed..

anyway heres the new idea... today at the bargain barn I found this really cool meat grinder!....... anyone see it?:laugh:

if I was running a stock carb this would be simple, just send a bolt through the crank side of the grinder with a rubber gromit. the thing is even tall enough to where it would fit right above the head from the carb :eek:hmy::doah:... but my carb is from a Tec so Im gonna have to do some machining to get it hooked up, but if you guys with those pulse jet briggs carbs wanna give it a shot the model is dormeyer AT-102-32...

this is so exciting.

hahaha...that's a cool idea Mr GR......can't wait to see it hooked up

me and my kid just finished making something similar but not nearly as cool as that "meat grinder"...:pimp:

hey that might be a cool name for the bike...."The Meat Grinder"
.

thats actually what I was gonna name my engine lol... the scramblers still a scrambler... well until i put a headlight/taillight on it... then its technically a roadster :doah:... ah well the engine is gonna be called the meat grinder (time to draw up a decal)..

just wait till I mod this engine, if I dont loose interest and/or start a new project, I plan to do every mod possible except running alcohol...

the meat grinder... i like that :001_rolleyes:
:
edit: i guess this thing is vintage  im gonna try to save the dormeyer on the side.. adds to its cool-ness i think :eek:ut:

ive think got it! that pipe on the bottom, im gonna cut off the big end completely, then weld up the hole with a piece of aluminum. the little side has a taper to it. see how theres a short fat end and then the long skinny end? im gonna cut the skinny end off and thread the short fat end. this way if i take a dremel and smooth out the corners on the inside it will make a venturi and speed up the airflow because the air is being forced into a smaller space. after that is said and done all i need is two elbow pipe adapters and a long nipple to create a 90 degree angle, then i bolt it down directly beside my carb. and ive got myself a fancy Vintage Dormeyer High Performance engine scoop! , which thanks to the venturi effect should actually work in giving boost. oh yeah and all the air being taken in will be pre-warmed by the engine block. not sure if that really matters though

cant wait to get started :pimp:

Dude, I have to give it to ya. You have made a good comeback from the "electricution" incident. Keep thinkin and uses what ya got.
Cool idea.

Daaah man wrong guy. So sorry. Grave booger or something like that.
Well cool idea anyway.
:laugh: yeah I know who your talking about, I was gonna say I would think i would remember being electrocuted.. do spark plug zaps count?:laugh:

but yeah thanks, hopefully i can get it finished

okay now I need some opinions on something..

so I cut the crank side off completely leaving just the taper, Ive decided the bigger end is going to hook to the carb because its threaded so I can probably find a pipe adapter that will fit it, and the 'filter' plate can stop the airfilter from being inhaled. so of course now I gotta close up that little hole. been looking through my crap and Ive found some knockouts I can weld in to close that hole right up and leave a smooth surface. I also found this skull thing that came from my wallet. on the other side of the hole (on the inside of the scoop) I have a pretty damn strong neodymium magnet, that just barely fits down the hole, connected to a knockout. when the knockout sits nicely on the inside, replacing the hole with a smooth metal surface. I got lucky too, because that ONE part of the whole thing is a different type of metal, and its the ONLY place on the scoop that gets a good connection. :pimp:

here's the pics.

cut the taper.. hole I need to close.

With the knockout

With the skull, I think it kinda matches my meat grinder theme but is it too much? Im thinking half and half :eek:ut: also with the skull I dont have to do any welding, the pins in the back keep it compressed to the walls of the hole, plus its attracted to the magnet, so it aint going anywhere.

so what should I do? (Get a new camera isnt an option yet )

Well..you gone from a interesting concept in airflow to ..attaching a meat grinder to your engine. The scoop looks cool. How are you going to hook it up to your carb? It's shiny anyway. People like shiny..

For the carb im gonna use a piece of scrap metal as a plate, cut 3 holes. Two for the bolts and one for the intake. Weld a short nipple to the intake hole, get a 90 degree elbow and aim it out of the side. Another nipple to let the scoop stick out just snugging up the fuel lines. Plus an adapter or two to shrink ithe tube size down to the size of the intake. And it needs polished up a tiny bit but all in all it's gonna make an awesome piece. Tomorrow I'm gonna grind out the inside so it's smooth, it's got bumps in it kinda like a food processor. Once those are clean it's ready for use. Just gotta find the money for the piping.

And I haven't abandoned my old scoop idea, this thing was just too cool to pass up, so I postponed that idea.

If I could make a suggestion,You might want to start with a exhaust tip instead of welding to pieces together. Some of them seem like it would be proportional to the size of the engine and a good start for your refitted scoop.

You mean like an exhaust flange? If the plate connecting to the carb was thick enough I could just tap it and thread the nipple in, then I don't gotta screw around with welding.

I mean like a exhaust accessory you buy at pep boys etc.You were trying to reinvent the wheel, when something similar to that shape already exists.
ooh I see what you mean now.. like this
Rupp Clamp on Flare

I never really considered myself creating a new idea, I just would thought it would be cool to put a scoop on a mini. and the fact that it was once a meat grinder makes it a good conversation piece.

I could always go one step and above to NOT closing both the holes on the rear pipe. then get a metal rod and a fan blade wheel. the rod goes through the whole thing holding the fan outside the metal filter plate on the big end. the rod can be threaded and have nuts on either end to hold it in place. on the outside where my skull is I could have a tiny pulley, and on the engine replace the starter clutch with a custom starter cup with a pulley on that end. cut a couple gaps in the shroud only big enough for a belt to pass through. hook the belt on both pulleys and I got myself an engine driven intake fan. But I dunno if its really worth it to go that far

not so much an update but... I went to homedepot today and picked up a 2" 90 degree hose because no tubing would fit over the odd size. I also got a PVC cap to use as my carb adapter.

and these pics are just because they look better than the last ones. but you guys like pictures anyway right?

a somewhat better picture of the skull

and with the hose

tomorrow Im gonna grind and smooth out the inside for better flow, then I gotta get a foam filter so it doesnt inhale a very unlucky mosquito :laugh: and lastly I may need to make a bracket because that hose isnt the most secure thing on earth and it won't look right if it flaps. :doah:.. either way I can't wait to put it on this weekend.
