Good buy Briggs 3 h.p

#1
Good day guys could use a little input if you could. I have found a 3 h.p Briggs and Stratton brand new in the box with tags on and all and am wondering if it's a good buy or not so counting on your experience to help decide. The only concern I have is the gear reduction device on the side leaves me wondering what shaft is under it? The guy wants $150.00, sure I could get it down some but not sure if it's worth it for a mini build. Any advice

the engine is real nice, but the problem is once you remove the gear reduction there is only a very short crank shaft with a spline. You will need to change out the crankshaft to be able to use it on a minibike. So add another 50 to 75 bucks to whatever you can buy it for.

Your most likely gonna have to change the crank if it has the short spline crankshaft on it. After the gear reduction is removed you will be able to tell.

OldnBrke, have you got in more pics ? Yea that gear reduction ...I don't know ?!?!
Hi OND, sorry that's the only pic I've got however, the guy is going to remove the gear box on the weekend and take a pic for me so that'll certainly help. Hopefully it's a 3/4 with keyed shaft however, it still leaves me with is it worth the money being that old. I'd imagine the seals and everything may be all dried up and who know's what else. One thing I'm wonder is can the output shaft be changed it it's tapered or splined and how difficult a task it would be? Along side his add was another used one of the same vintage for $200.00 that I'll pass on, here is a pic of that one, at least it's got the right shaft on it Lol

I would give him 50 for it....and remind him how lucky he was he got that. Like the others say....the crank will need to be changed...which defeats the purpose of the NOS motor.

Ask and yea shall receive, Thank you all for the very prompt response, GREAT!!! Question what all is involved in changing out the shaft and where might a person obtain one new or in decent shape. Doing the work on the motor is not an issue for me :hammer: so hopefully it'll lower the cost should it come to that. Thanks again guys, Cheers
Sorry had to use the little characters, fun aren't they?

As cheezy said you have to replace the whole crankshaft...not saying it can't be done...and you probably can find a good crankshaft for it , if you decide thats what you want to do.

Anyone change the output on one of these? Are parts still available? I'd imagine the shaft and the case will have to be changed, any suggestions  or should I keep looking :confused1:

I would love to see someone run a gear on the reduction unit to a jackshaft with a clutch on it! Be a trendsetter! Go get that motor and make it work!...and run double chain and make it look like a meat grinder!

I've never eyeballed one of these gear reduction unit's, it certainly would be interesting to see if it could be used or the shaft at least. Kind of sad really, thought I had scored a nice one being brand new of that vintage. Meat grinder....na, a gas powered mixer for the hunting cabin

you should be able to find a NOS crankshaft on ebay once you have the part number. Changing the crank shaft is pretty simple
oldfatguy.....OldnBrke, seeing some common theme's here Lol, I couldn't decide between the Brke or Brkn, would have been too long with both  I'll wait and see the pic the guy is going to send me this weekend and go from there, I would agree there should be parts around.

Dear Oldnbrke, The first thing that jumped out at me when I looked at your pic was the UNPAINTED reduction gear. If this really is a new in box Briggs it would seem to me that the gear box should have the same factory paint job as the rest of the motor. Call me a skeptic but I'm always suspicious when I see ads like this. Anyone with a computer can print out a factory tag. Add in a couple cans of spray paint and presto; a new in box, never been run, never had oil in it, classic Briggs. And all for only $150.00. If it seems too good to be true......and you know the rest. Just my tow cents worth. Ogy
