Rusty Patina

The first time I ever heard of Fluid Film, an old farmer showed me an engine that had been on saw horses behind his barn for several years. Not under a shelter, just out in the weather. he had honed all four cylinders and was waiting for rings. he sprayed two cylinders with the last of his Fluid Film, and sprayed WD40 in the other two cylinders. He never got back to it because he found another engine for his tractor. The cylinders sprayed with WD had surface rust in them. The Fluid Film cylinders were shiny and slick like melted wax. I used to apply boiled linseed oil to equipment that had to live outside. Now, I buy Fluid Film by the case.

The only problem with this product is it is so clear you can't see it coming out of the can. After 3 years I finally realized the can was empty. I was wondering why it wasn't working too well for the last two years.

I do not know if there is a decent way to remove it if you want to paint at a later date. It is lanolin based, not petroleum. I do know that us you spray it on a plow in early summer, it will be there in the spring, but it you pull that plow through a couple miles of dirt, the coating will come off.
It would make that little tricycle look dark and wet like fresh rain forever, indoors.

WD-40 and Fluid film both would work to "preserve the rust". WD-40 is an old biker trick, they have been using it for years. You can usually smell that stuff a mile away, at least it doesn't stink like gear oil.

I never understood why people spray clear over rust. Rust isn't supposed to be shiny.
