Predator 212cc Throttle Cable Screw Stripped

#21
 Not laughing at cha....but with you...yea I 've had that happen a lot, vice grips popping off. I wouldn't try drilling it its to small of a screw.
I hear ya, no worries. Yep, thought I had it for a sec... started turning, and POP. No dice. Can't believe this little screw is turning into such a big pain. I've honestly bought almost an entire tools box worth of crap trying to get this ONE little bastard off, lol.

Can you file a flat spot to get a better grip?
With the way it's set up, I have basically no room to maneuver at all, and the only file I have handy is too fat to work with such a little screw I'd imagine.

If you keep squeezing on the same points on the screw head.. you can distort it enough to get somewhat of flat spots on each side.

I am using the ends :(

Everytime I seem to get any kind of grip, I squeeze a bit tighter and they pop right off.
Something doesn't sound right. You don't squeeze *after* the vice grips are attached. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding you.

Also it sounds like maybe you still have the air cleaner & tank installed. If you remove one or the other you'll have a lot more room to work.

I'm not far away if you need help.

I'll actually try and give that a shot. I'm not sure what else can be done myself. I'm at a loss. Really starting to see why the previous owner found a crappy alternative instead of fixing it himself, haha.

I know where you're coming from......I bet you get that thing out pretty soon !

I can't really get them to "lock" onto the screw. When I do, the grip it locks with isn't sufficient enough to turn the screw, it just slides.

Yeah, I do have everything still installed. I'm not confident in my ability to take things like that off, then put them back on and have the engine still start/run as well as it is now.

I might actually take you up on your offer one of these upcoming weekends if I can't get it off by then  Since yeah, I'd have WAY more room than the measly few inches I currently have, lol.

Two nuts on the outside of the air box , right beside the choke lever...one rubber hose from air box to valve cover.....take it off and get you some room. If you need help getting it back together....we will help you.

You can say that again... I feel dumb now. I thought I'd have to take off the carb or something when I took off the air box... didn't realize it was just the two bolts and the hose! Doh!

Now that I have more room to work... Let's give it another go, and see what happens.

At the very least, with this much more working room, I should at LEAST be able to rig something up like the previous owner did.

Thats the only way...the right way ! ^^^^^^^^^^^
I agree with you gentlemen, but I'm having absolutely no luck tonight =/

Even with the extra space, I still couldn't get that screw to budge. No luck on trying to deform it either, the inside might strip easy, but the outside is tough as hell, probably just to spite me :cursing: lol.

I definitely would prefer to get this thing off so I never have to worry about it again... but at this rate, I'm starting to feel like this thing might as well have been welded into the bolt, with as much progress as I'm making, haha.

Funniest thing about this bike is... EVERYTHING is rigged xD The brake is just a scrub brake with an old worn out piece of rubber for the grip/stopper thing. Made my new tire completely bald when I put it on in a matter of days... The footrests are just little pieces of handlebars from an old bicycle welded to the frame...LOL, it doesn't have a kickstand at all, it doesn't have a kill switch, (Although they provided me with a switch that I'm ASSUMING can be wired as a kill switch, but I have no idea how to do that either) one problem at a time I suppose! Haha. I definitely have enough to work on with this bike.

At least it'll help me achieve a bit of what I got it for... To learn how to maintain/fix/upgrade minibikes and the like.

Now I wanna see this contraption! Post a picture please

Since you are getting brave, the whole lever comes off if you remove the yellow circled nut. Then you can remove the stop from the lever and replace it without ever getting the screw loose.

Or just loosen the yellow nut enough to get the the underside of the lever to remove the stop.

I was just going to ask "Is there a way to take it out from the other side of the lever?" You beat me to it you clever son of a gun! I actually updated one of my posts on the first page with pictures of the bike and the stubborn screw, haha, take a peek.

Taking off that lever doesn't mess with any of those many springs I see under there? Guess I'm going to find out, because that screw has Got. To. Go.

Is there a reason your not just using the other set up? Predators have two ways of running the cable as you can see in the pic. If you come in from the back side there is another clamp and another cable stop to attach to. Worst case you can always move the other cable stop to the buggered ones spot after you get it off.

That yellow circled screw/bolt is another place to put the cable? I didn't realize that until you said it... Words can't describe the feeling I'm experiencing right now. Looking at my engine, it doesn't LOOK rusted/stuck.. let's see if that one comes loose without an issue and if so, I think you might have just came up with a solution that makes me feel like a grade-A dumbass.
